Our favorite clothing rack, the Untyo Clothes Rack, featured a sturdy yet lightweight build, complete with wheels for transporting it with ease. At a great price, the rack was also able to hold a variety of items. Here, the best clothing racks for creating extra, stylish storage in your space, backed by our testing. After thoroughly testing almost a dozen clothing racks at The Lab, the Untyo Clothes Rack stood out as the clear winner of our best overall spot, thanks to its sturdy, lightweight, and spacious design. Right away, our testers were impressed with this rack that came with pretty clear instructions and labels for assembly. The only “catch” during assembly was the lack of labels indicating where the screws needed to be added to the bottom shelves. Otherwise, putting together this rack was easy and took our testers 29 minutes—a few less than the average setup time of the day. Once assembled, the rack looked incredibly simple and sleek. Available in both white and black finishes, it’s sure to blend into a variety of spaces, plus offer plenty of storage thanks to its two rods and two shelves. In our experience, the rack was able to hold a variety of clothing items—from shoes to scarves and baskets if you would like to tuck accessories away. The wheels make this rack really easy to transport, and our tester noted that the rack felt stable when in motion. When we added two 10-pound bags to the rods, there were zero signs of bending or distress. “Even with two bars, it doesn’t feel like it will tip over,” our tester said, adding that it also transitioned from a hard floor to a rug very well. All in all, we wouldn’t change a thing about this product. It checked off all the boxes and is surely a spacious, reliable option for anyone looking for a clothing rack. If you live in a small space, you might need to be a little strategic about where you place it since the double rods make it bulkier than a single-rod option. But, we ultimately gave this pick multiple 5-star ratings and think it’s well worth the price tag—in fact, we’d be willing to pay more for this product. It’s that good. Price at time of publish: $56 Now, the downfall of this rack is its lack of different storage options. One rod and one bottom shelf—suitable mainly for large-sized shoes—isn’t ideal if you’re hoping to store your entire closet. The whole product is quite minimal, but it’s also offered in black and white finishes so you can match it to your decor. It would be a particularly great option for holding outfits for a photo shoot or displaying items in a store, in addition to the more traditional uses for a clothing rack in your home. Several other rod configurations are also available from this brand if you want to spend a few more dollars for added storage space. Price at time of publish: $35 However, once assembled, this rack is very sturdy. The bamboo rod could withstand the two 10-pound bags just fine. Though the wire shelves—which you can set to your desired height—did bend a bit and proved not to be a suitable spot for heavy items. In addition, the rack doesn’t come with wheels, so you’ll want to set it up in your desired location or plan to shift it to its forever home. We believe the price tag is a bit high, but it’s suitable for a standout piece you’ll have for a long time. Notably, this rack is available in a smaller size and in both white and black, too. Price at time of publish: $190 Now, when we tested the weight capacity of this rack, it was clear that it’s not as durable as others. The rod definitely sagged in the face of the 10-pound bags, and a lack of wheels also means you will need to have a friend or family member help you move it. Otherwise, it’s versatile and functional—a piece you’d want to fit into the decor of your office, mudroom, bedroom, or even living room. It’s a bit expensive but is also worth splurging on since you can make it blend into many spaces over time. Price at time of publish: $129 It is important to note that the instructions for this rack were just a photo. There are several pieces and parts, all of which are pretty heavy, so more detailed instructions would be helpful and ensure a speedier assembly process. The rack is adjustable, but our testers found the parts a bit hard to move, given their weight. Lastly, the rack is quite tall, so you’ll want to make sure you have enough space for it before adding it to your cart. Price at time of publish: $58 Despite being lightweight, this aesthetic clothing rack is also “surprisingly durable,” according to our testers. The rod didn’t show any major signs of distress when we applied the 10-pound bags, though it was a little bit wobbly. At the end of the day, our tester said they’d want to proudly display this rack. You can shop it in black or white, depending on the style of your space and your personal preference. Price at time of publish: $98 All that being said, though, our tester did wish that the setup process was easier. While the instructions were clear and the pieces were labeled, the alignments of the pieces felt a little off. We noticed that you can’t really tighten the screws either until everything is in place, and that step in itself made the process take longer. We took a solid 50 minutes to assemble this rack that also doesn’t feature wheels. But, if you’re in the market for a rustic clothing rack, then this pick is certainly the most practical, durable, and spacious. You just may need an afternoon to set it up. Price at time of publish: $120 COPREE Bamboo Garment Rack: The COPREE Bamboo Garment Rack is another aesthetic option for a variety of homes, but it didn’t prove to be very durable in our testing. The rod sagged when we put the 10-pound bags on it, and our tester described the material of the rack as very delicate. They said they couldn’t see it holding up for a long time and found it a little wobbly. With stylish and thoughtful knobs, a rod, and multiple shelves, this rack certainly has a lot of organization options. It took our tester over an hour to set up, though, and the wood split when the screws were added.

How We Tested the Clothing Racks

We purchased and tested 11 clothing racks side-by-side in The Lab in Industry City, Brooklyn during our clothing racks test. To start, our team unboxed and completed the setup for each rack, noting if the instructions were clear and if assembly took as long as was advertised or much longer than they would expect it to. They noted if it was a two-person task, so you know if you need to call a friend for extra help and whether the various pieces and parts were labeled. Once assembled, they evaluated the organizational ability of each rack and took notes on the rods, shelves, knobs, or hooks that the product included. They hung a sweater, jacket, vest, pair of pants, set of fabric shelves, and hat on the rack. Accessories like a tote bag and pair of shoes were also added to the rack if possible. Our testers noted if the rack felt spacious and could hold a variety of items neatly, or if it felt limited and very wobbly throughout the process of loading it up. From there, our testers challenged the durability of each clothing rack. They placed two 10-pound weights in separate tote bags, and hung them on metal S-hooks on the rod. If the rod bent, dipped, or looked a little distressed, we noted it. We also considered the materials each rack was made of at this time and decided if they felt flimsy or like they’d last a lifetime. After testing durability, our team considered the design of each rack and answered questions like, “Does it have wheels and do they move smoothly?” They tried rolling the rack, if it did have wheels, from a rug to a hard floor to see if it remained stable. Testers took specialty features into account, as well as the overall aesthetic of the rack to determine what spaces it may look or work the best in. Finally, our testers took their entire experience into account when judging the overall value of each rack. Our editors then boiled down all of the data to put together this list of what we believe are, the very best clothing racks for extra, stylish, and functional storage in your space.

What to Look for in a Clothing Rack

Size

The first thing you should consider when shopping for a clothing rack is the size you need the rack to be. There are tall, wide, and compact options on the market to suit a wide variety of needs. We highly recommend measuring the space you plan to put your rack and making sure the dimensions of your potential purchase align. If you’re looking to add a clothing rack to your bedroom because you don’t have a traditional closet, then you may want a rack that’s in the larger size. If you want to add a rack to your entryway to hang up jackets on your way in the door, then you may want a tinier pick that you can tuck into a corner. Consider how bulky the bottom shelves may be and when in doubt, look for a rack that’s adjustable and can be worked into several different spaces as a result.

Organization Options

Clothing racks will always include at least one rod for hanging up your belongings. However, you may also find racks with one or multiple shelves, knobs for hanging hats and bags, and S-hooks for those tiny items that would otherwise collect in a basket. When shopping, think about what you plan to put on the rack to ensure the rack has the right features and versatility to suit your needs. Also, consider the durability of the rack’s materials. A single, flimsy rod will not be suitable for hanging up a stack of heavy coats, even if it’s long and generally spacious. Katie Berry, The Spruce’s Cleaning Review Board member, notes that racks with shelves—in addition to giving you more flexible storage options—also tend to be sturdier. Berry also stresses that if your household has young children, it’s key to look for a rack “that can be fastened to the wall to prevent tipping.”

Color

Clothing racks are meant to be both functional and stylish pieces for your home, so it’s key to think about the color of the rack you’re purchasing and how it’ll blend into your decor. Racks can often be found in white, black, chrome, and natural (if it’s made of bamboo or wood) colorways. Some might look rustic, while others look very clean, minimalistic, or even utilitarian. Taking the purpose of the rack into consideration—whether it be to display clothes or store cleaning supplies— may help you decide on a color if you’re feeling indecisive.

Standout Features

Rolling Wheels

Wheels are a feature you can find on some clothing racks, but not all. They typically make the rack a lot more portable, and are a great feature to consider if you plan on moving your belongings around your space often or are using the rack in a photo shoot situation, laundry room, or basement for lots of added storage. Some wheels may be flimsy, so keep an eye out for reviews of smooth-gliding and easy-to-use wheels.

Adjustable Design

An adjustable design gives you more options when deciding on a place to put your rack and putting items on it. It may include buttons that allow you to adjust the height of the rod, making it easier to reach or more suitable for short-hanging items, or a rod that extends so you can hang more tops or jackets at one time. If you’re not entirely sure how much space you’ll need to store your belongings, or you plan on moving and bringing the rack with you to a different place, an adjustable design is well-worth considering.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Marisa Casciano is a senior commerce editor for The Spruce, focusing on appliances, cleaning, and organization. She has researched the ins and outs of vacuums, air purifiers, dishwashers, cooktops, wine fridges, woven baskets, wool dryer balls, and more in the home space. She helped develop and execute our clothing racks test, and scoured brand, retailer, and third-party websites to select which racks would be tested in The Lab. She considered price, design, organization options, size, and also verified customer reviews when selecting the racks. When narrowing down the testing insights from The Lab, she heavily weighed durability, spaciousness, and value, and considered how difficult it was to assemble each pick. For example, you can use one to store cleaning supplies, garden gear, or extra snacks in a basement or garage. If you’re a photographer, performer, or small business owner, you can use a clothing rack to house outfits or costumes. You can also set up a clothing rack in your living room, office, or entryway and give your jackets, blankets, or tote bags a loving home. There are projects you can follow along with on The Spruce and YouTube—but remember to have a professional help you if you don’t have experience with any of the tools that are recommended.
